COMBINING TWO DISTINCT & SEPERATE BUSINESSES

Designed Securities Ltd. is an independent Canadian investment dealer that provides the regulated infrastructure required for securities investing. The firm is regulated by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and is a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), which provides protection for eligible client accounts held with member firms.

As the investment dealer, Designed Securities provides supervision, trade execution, regulatory oversight, and account administration for investment accounts. Client accounts are custodied through a carrying broker relationship with Aviso Wealth, a large Canadian brokerage platform that provides clearing, custody, and settlement services.

This structure separates financial advice, dealer supervision, and asset custody, helping ensure investments are held within Canada’s regulated securities framework while allowing advisors to deliver institutional-level services within an independent advisory environment.

Maple Groove Financial represents the financial planning and insurance side of the business and works with PPI as our managing general agency (MGA). Through PPI, we have access to an extensive selection of insurance providers, allowing us to help structure solutions for both personal and business insurance needs.

LEGEND AND EXAMPLE

Fees Through a Disciplined Lens

How powerful are cognitive biases and heuristics?

The financial services industry is undergoing a significant transformation, and much of that change is being driven by investors themselves. As transparency increases and clients gain a clearer understanding of how advice is delivered and how costs are structured, investors are increasingly voting with their dollars.

Throughout my career, I have focused on positioning clients in the most appropriate cost structures available based on their objectives, the nature of their assets, and the complexity of their planning needs. Fees should never exist in isolation. They are part of the broader environment in which assets are held, strategies are implemented, and long-term plans are developed.

For that reason, my pricing philosophy has always centred on placing client assets in structures where costs are appropriate, transparent, and supportive of long-term growth. The objective is not simply to minimize fees, but to ensure clients are positioned in environments where capital can grow efficiently and sustainably over time.

Clients should also be cautious about how pricing is sometimes presented. Terms such as exclusivity, private access, or membership in a select group are often used to create the perception of added value, while large teams and impressive titles can suggest a level of sophistication that may not always translate into better outcomes. These approaches rely on well-known behavioural biases that appear across many industries, where perceived prestige or scarcity can influence decision-making more than the underlying structure or cost efficiency. Consider examples such as Trump Steaks and other highly branded products where perception played a larger role than the underlying value. Maple Groove Wealth Planners encourages thoughtful evaluation and deeper thinking.

It is also common to hear the argument that larger organizations are better positioned to serve clients because of their size, resources, or scale. In my practice, client inflow and overall capacity are carefully managed, and growth is intentionally controlled so every client relationship receives proper attention. Structured check-ins and satisfaction systems are built into the planning process to ensure no client ever falls through the cracks as the practice evolves.

Similarly, when claims of being “better” are expressed through a few polished phrases without meaningful explanation or supporting evidence, the conclusion may be shaped more by emotion than by disciplined, data-driven reasoning. Sound financial advice should not rely on those signals. What ultimately matters is whether the structure surrounding your assets is transparent, appropriate for your circumstances, and intentionally designed to support your long-term financial objectives. Fees should reflect the level of planning, attention, and complexity involved, and may be adjusted where appropriate to ensure the structure remains fair and aligned with the work required.

I ultimately encourage clients to look beyond branding, messaging, or perceived prestige and focus on the substance of the advice they receive. Financial planning is not simply a service; it is a long-term partnership that requires diligence, discipline, and genuine commitment.

I invite you to experience what financial passion and excellence look like when an advisor is fully invested in your success and willing to go the distance to ensure it.

If you are reading the paragraphs to the left and have explored the 3D graph above, you may have had a moment where a thought surfaced: “Why was this never presented to me this way before?”

If your first instinct is to immediately justify why it was not, that reaction itself illustrates how powerful cognitive biases and heuristics can be. Our minds often defend familiar decisions before fully examining the underlying evidence.

I work best with individuals who are willing to look past first impressions, branding, and proxies for expertise, and instead focus on knowledge, experience, and reasoning grounded in data. Through disciplined thinking and a strong work ethic, I bring the experience and capability your hard-earned dollars deserve.

If the ideas in the paragraphs to the left resonate with you, it may suggest that we are a good fit. When financial decisions are approached with disciplined thinking and sound habits, trust should be matched with integrity. In that case, a conversation may be worthwhile.
